Prompt 3: "Please Read This Story, Thank You" by Linton Weeks (NPR)

Central argument: Magic words such as: “please” or “thank you” are being forgotten in our modern life-style.

I was rose up in an educated family. The words “please” and “thank you” go with me in most of my daily conversation. Maybe, these words are part of my life. I use it even when I talk to a stranger. I do not know what is happening in this world that we are living right now. Teenagers do not do what they are supposed to do, especially their behavior. They try to follow their model; just simply doing what their model is doing, being a cool guy. I am not saying that they should go back to what they believe, but I think that it is impossible to stop what they are doing. Since the teenagers these days are just too stubborn, or arrogant. Revolution is supposed to make better changes, but I only see the magic words such as “please” and “thank you” is being tolerant in this modern world. I believe in the article “Please read this story, thank you,” by Linton Weeks, is true because first, I have experienced it, people tend to forget the basic; second, Christ Brown is a model that many teenagers want to be like him.

I will use experience in my life to show that that the words “please” or “thank you” are being tolerant by our life-style. As I observe the life-style in Hong Kong city, I see that their life-style is very fast. People do not border to stay and talk for a minute. In their conversation, I only hear about business, and in the end of their conversation, I just heard the words “bye” or “I’ll see you later.” The question I want to bring up in here is that, is it taking a lot of time for say the magic words like “thank you”? The effect of the modern life-style has a big impact in our life style now. People just care about their own stuff. The first basic words that a human being learns when he or she goes to school are “please” and “thank you” but the more we grow up the more basic that we forget. I believe that we need to catch up with the modern life-style just to please the society that we are living right now, but forget the basic words like “thank you” and “please” are not acceptable.

A big model is like Christ Brown is an example for the two words “thank you” and “please” is being forgotten. Nowadays, the young generation tends not to say the words “please” and “thank you” because they think that it is uncool if they say it. Young generation wants to become just like their model, and they are just being arrogant and stubborn. They try not to accept the existent of the magic words “please” and “thank you”. The logic lies in this case is that, if Christ Brown is cool by not saying the words “please” and “thank you”, and the kids want to be cool, therefore we will have the result that the kids do not want to say the words “please” and “thank you”. Christ Brown is the model that stands for the new modern life-style. Therefore the existence of the words “please” and “thank you” are being forgotten.

Through the two examples I gave, it proves the fact that the magic words such as “please” and “thank you” are being forgotten by the modern life. I personally think that if the changes the society brings up make us forget about the basic, then I think that there is no need for that change, because it is necessary. For some time in your life, I recommend you to slow down what you are doing to see how things are being change, basic stuffs are being forgotten. You will know what I mean by that.

Week 3, Prompt 2: "Does Surveillance Make Us Morally Better?" by Emrys Westacott (Philosophy Now)

Central argument: All the right things we do under surveillance are not always moral.

There are many choices in our life, but in the cruel world that we are living right now, we do not really have the choice. All the choice that we have which use to decide what to do in life have narrowed down until only two choice which are ethical or not. We have to do the right thing to suit the people around us. According to Emrys Westcott, a professor of philosophy at Alfred University believes that surveillance fails to make people morally better. I do agree with Westcott belief because under the surveillance of the CCTV we tend to do the ethical choices which make us look more morally but in fact we are not, novel One Flew over the Cuckoo’s nest and The yellow wallpaper . For an example we try not to cheat but in reality cheating is unavoidable.

Imagine, in the future, CCTV is everywhere. Let’s make it easier to understand. I will use the case which the police use CCTV to observe the traffic. We, as a human being are born will no evil, but the our action is the way that leads ourselves to the ethical choice. In the traffic system, everyone does want to follow the laws or rules. Not always, everybody will follow the rules and laws because there are some obstacles which are lying in our way. These obstacles are the main reason why we want to break the laws or rules. For an example, a person who follows the rules for his entire life, but one day his mom is sick and almost passes away. As a good son, that person has to make his ethical choice. One is following the rules not to pass the red traffic light, but late to see his mom. Second he has to pass the red traffic light to see his mom. Ethical choice is made in this case. With CCTV we will see how people make their decision which sometime is ethical but sometime is not. In the case that a person follows the rules, he does the right thing, but do you think that by doing this action will make him look morally.

In the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’ nest, the nurses’ action was to surveillance the patient. The outcome turns out that the action of the patients did not look morally at all. All they did was rebelled the nurses to get their free. The moral of the novel is that no one can beat down the system, because the system has the power to control everything within its range. Therefore under the surveillance of the nurse, the victims were like the dog listen to the order of the system. Until Mc Murphy comes, everything changes. All the well educate people who read the novel for the first time will think that Mc Murphy does the right thing and see the system as a bad thing. After reading for two or three times, people who read the novel might think like this: Mc Murphy is just a stubborn person who does not know anything about the ethical choice, because all Mc Murphy did was just making the victim goes against the system. Let’s look back, victims are under the surveillance of the nurse but still their actions are not moral.

Another novel which is called The yellow wallpaper, by ….. shows that under the surveillance people action is not moral. The novel talks about a woman who traps herself in the room, and her intuition or might be imagination which led her to her dead. The readers seem to be a the surveillance of the woman in the book. First we see that the woman in the novel seem to choose the right thing to believe. Until on part of the novel, the woman’s imagination has gone beyond the limit, and that is the place where the ethical choice took place. In the end of the novel, the woman chooses to kill herself. Under the surveillance of the reader, she chooses the dead. Does anyone think that the action that the woman took was moral? I do not think so.

Surveillance is a way to make people decide to take their path. The path that people choose might be ethical for some cases, but some cases it is not ethical. Nothing is perfect in this cruel world that we are living. Therefore I personally think that under surveillance will make people have more in choosing the right thing to do.

Week 3, Prompt 4: "The Rise of 'Awesome'" by Robert Lane Greene (Intelligent Life)

Central argument: Awesome stands for things are different from its original; on the other words its meaning is revolution

Many things have changed over time such as phones, technology, our daily life and various things. Humans are part of the word awesome. What I mean is that humans have been evolving many times from the ancient time to the modern recently. Also various things have its own revolution to reach a higher stage or rank, other than humans are animals, and even diction. Many words were changed its own meaning to something for the need of humans’ expression. Therefore, I agree with the article The Rise of Awesome, written by Robert Lane Green. The article explains how the word “Awesome” changed its meaning over time to establish the need of humans in expressing their feeling. The reason I agree with the article The Rise of Awesome, Robert Lane, is that changing is a part of common sense, and to adapt to the situation.

Around the world, many revolutions have taken places, without revolution some countries are still under the control of colonization of some countries. Let’s take my country for an example; Vietnam was under the control of China for a long period of time, around thousand years. It is a common sense that a country is under the control of another country for that long period of time would actually rise up to get their freedom. Vietnam is not a part of China, we have our own language, and culture. Other countries are not allowed to colonize us. In this situation, revolution was taking a major role. Without revolution, I doubt that my country would even there on the world map.
Technology is a part of revolution, to adapt the market which pleases the customers. In this paragraph, I will use the phone model as my example. Many scientists have been thinking about what to upgrade. Therefore evolution is taking place. In the past, the model of the phone was very big, and heavy. Now, looking back to the phone, I see that it has changed so much. It is very small and light. What is the main point that I want to bring up here? It is the revolution that makes the change in the model of the phone from big and heavy to small and light. Humans’ expectation is becoming perfect which lead to the change. Maybe in the future, the same small and light phone model that we are using right now might change the size of the thinness. The model might be as thin as paper. The cause of revolution is unpredicted.
Our daily life also changed due to the meaning of the word “awesome” is revolution. From the past, humans have been using animals as the only transportation. Then go to the industrialization era, humans started to use train and transportation with used steam in order to work. Currently, humans are using oil and fuel to run the transportation. In the future, I think the revolution of the technology will stretch beyond our imagination now. The main point I want to bring up here is the revolution. In the past we used animals, but toward to the future, we are currently using transportations run by oil, fuel, and even electricity. How different it is from the past. All of this was caused by revolution. Some revolution is good which bring the goods and benefits for the humankind, but some revolution goes in the opposite direction of the good one. For an example, the novel, Animal farm, by …… Revolution acts as a major role to lead the animals to the utopia, but in the end everything goes wrong and even worst. The revolution between the animals and Mr. John led to the tragedy ending. Not all the revolutions are good.
We, humans really need the revolution, in order to reach to a higher level, but not all revolutions are good. It might bring the bad result. The change we need is to make our life easier. It is just like the word “awesome”, from its first meaning, it makes its own revolution to develop itself to have another meaning.

Week 2, Prompt 3: "Of Youth and Age"

Being fearless, and have a good imagination is already there in the Youths, but not all have it.

Response:

We grow older and older everyday. On the other way, we become more mature. Everyone has to go through their youth age, and that is the law of nature. In the youth, we pretend that there is nothing to be fear or affair off, but we never know that the youth age passes so fast. Also not all the Youths have the spirit of being Fearless or imagination. Sir Francis Bacon brought a lot of example in helping to prove that his belief is true. I agree with his idea because of Juggut Singh and Mc. Murphy in both novel Train to Pakistan and One flew over the Cuckoo’s nest, and Taylor Swift, a teenager singer that they are special examples Youths. A person who runs out of either imagination or braveness might be considering that he is old.

As people do not know about the novels Train to Pakistan by …… and One flew over the Cuckoo’s nest by ……… These two novels contain good examples of Youth. Juggut Singh, main character in novel Train to Pakistan is one of the good examples of the Youth. Throughout the novel, Juggut has done many different challenges. He shows that he is fearless. An example which shows that Juggut is fearless is when stood up and protect the train on the way to go to Pakistan. His action was proved he is not affair of dying. Mc Murphy has an alternative ending from Juggut. Instead of scarifying the body to save the train, Mc Murphy was killed by his closest friend, Mr. Brommden. Through out the novel, Mc Murphy is a character who was portrait under ……’s imagination; despite the fact that Mc Murphy is a fearless person. The fact is that Mc Murphy did go against all the rules in the ward like beating up the Big Nurse who was considered the controller in the ward, making the vote or even party when he is not allowed. Both of characters have different story but they both the youth inside them; they are fearless.

About Taylor Swift, she has a good imagination. Writing songs which is using her experience, that is one way shows the she has the youth, by using her imagination. One of her album named “Fearless”, this album was sold for more than thousand copy, tells story about her life. Nowadays, it is hard to find a singer which has a good imagination like her which using her story life in a song. By showing the spirit of fearless, she accepts challenge; such as a first celebrity to appear on the cover of Justine magazine. Not stopping there, she moves on with her plan, by writing all the songs in the album “Speak Now”. Accepting challenge is like being fearless. Not all the youths can do the same thing as Taylor Swift.

Being special like Juggut Singh, Mc Murphy, and Taylor Swift is very hard. Having the youth is not a big problem because everyone has it. But make an efficient use of it is very hard. For the Youths these days, they are all fear of doing stuff, even stand up and answer the question. One again, being fearless and imagination will help you in building a good life.

Week 2, Prompt 1: "Of Marriage and Single Life"

Central argument: Married makes man learn about responsibility, but also a prison which is trapping him from the successful; regardless everything about married and single, it is just about choice.

There are two kinds of successful man in the society which are man who is single and the other is married. There are benefits for getting married or staying single. A single man will have more chance in spreading his potential in becoming the best one for the society. Different from being single, a married man will have less chance in proving himself that he is a best citizen toward his society. Despite all the benefits of being married and staying single, none of the choice in this world is perfect. That is why I am agreeing with Sir Francis Bacon, a philosopher lived approximately 400 years ago, about his thesis because of Juggut Singh and Momhamed from Train to Pakistan, and my experiment of being single. The best thing is that a person can make a choice over their life about what decision fits him the most.

According to the novel Train to Parkistan by ….. ; The author gives a good example about a married man and single man who are Juggut and Momhamed . Juggut Singh is a good example about married man, but the author does not mention about the married relationship between Juggut Singh and his wife. Think deeply about this, toward the end of the novel Juggut becomes a hero model, and it is proved that he save the train on the way to Pakistan. Different from Juggut, Momhamed stays single, an educated, and a smart one. He contributed many works for his society which is Delhi. By setting this example, the author of the novel Train to Parkistan wants to show that it is about the choice, despite all the result.
I live my life for about 18 years and I am sure about staying single still I become success. With my philosophy, I know what benefits me if I am staying either single or in the relationship. About the case that I am staying single, I will not be holding by anything, such as responsibility for my wife, my children, and look for the future. I will be free wild and can do my own stuffs that I ever wanted to do. But If I am married, I have to look over my family, my wife, and my children. Not just stopping at family, I also have to look forward toward my society. But while I am single, I can contribute a lot to my society. I know that it is just about choice, and someday I have to make a decision.

Sir Fracis Bacon has given massive information of the benefit of getting married and being single. The reason why he gives many different information is that he wants to warn young man that they should consider about their decision of getting married or staying single. In life if a person makes a wrong decision it is very hard to fix it. I know how it is when I made a wrong decision.

Week 1, Prompt 4: "Why Good Advertising Works (Even When You Think It Doesn't" by Nigel Hollis (The Atlantic)

Central argument: The author's idea is that advertisement requires a formula to make it work.

What is the reason which makes an advertisement become good? Even that an advertisement is not good, if the producer follows the formula. For a picky person, an advertisement requires a lot of different factors to make that person pays attention to. Then, what is the formula? A formula is that the advertisement should be easy to memorize. That is not enough, I suggest! Making an advertisement is like making a dish, to make a good dish; it requires a lot of different ingredients. Different ingredient for an advertisement can be ethos, pathos, and logos. Since people tend to believe in common sense; therefore logos is used the most. In some cases, adding to many ingredients will make the dish become bad. Advertisements nowadays become so hard to understand. For an example, some advertisements are just so random, and do not get to its main point. According to the article named Why Good Advertisement Works (Even When You Think It Doesn’t), it does not just give the answer of how an advertisement work, but also explain the reason why.

A television watcher such as woman is the one that actually put their eyes and concentration on the advertisement more than man. That is my assumption because woman tends to look at stuffs carefully than man. Unless, in the opposite situation. In this case, I choose the first case.
Woman has to look through variety advertisement on a product to choose a good one. These day, most of advertisements are also most the same. Therefore, woman cannot memorize everything, but to choose the one that easy to memorize. Let’s take an example, for the advertisement about The Old Spice the deodorant. The commercial only has a shirtless guy on a horse to promote the product. Seem so simple but the commercial has a lot of effect. Whenever woman talks about any hot guys, they will automatically promote about the product to their friend; since the commercial only shows a hot guys. Easy to memorize is the main formula to promote the product.

Advertisement producer tries their best to convince or persuade the costumer to buy their product. By repeating the same formula (easy to memorize) and adding different factors will make the advertisement easier to get attention of the viewer. For an example, by using logos (others might call syllogism) will make the viewer seem to believe; since it is almost commonsense. Let’s take an advertisement about Apple and BlackBerry. In the advertisement, you see a black- berry is shooting as a bullet but it does not piercing through an apple. Through this the logic behind the ad is that Apple product is good. If a customer buys an Apple product then the product will not be pierced by a black- berry. On other words, Apple product is better than BlackBerry product. Following the formula and adding a logic, for sure that the product which is promoting in the ad will be sold.

It is not simple to make an ad but if following the formula. It will become easier to promote the product. Being simply will make the viewers feel much better, because they do not have to think a lot to understand the ad. Then what do you look in an ad?

Week 1, Prompt 1: "TV Is Good for You" By Joel Waldfogel (Slate)

Central argument: The author's argument is that woman in the world still don't get equality especially in India.

Everyone has to watch Television at least once in their life. In this 21st century, with advantage of technology, the percentage of people who do not get a chance to watch TV decreases so much. Nobody can say that they haven’t watch Television in their life. Still many and many women do not get to watch TV. At least, that is my assumption, but the Joel Waldfogel, author of the article TV is good for you, shows that some woman, especially in rural regions of India do not get their chance to watch television. The main reason that Joel Waldfogel brought the topic that some woman do not get the chance of watching television is that he wants to share his idea about equality and freedom for Indian woman. By providing facts about woman in rural region of India, he wants to states that the equal right of woman in India has not reached the area where those women live. Beside Waldfogel’s point of view about women do not get their freedom or even equality in India, I also agree with Waldfogel’s point of view. Regardless that the women watch television, it is not going to help them gain the freedom or equal-right. They have to stand up and take action, if not miracle will not happen.

Waldfogel’s example are that “women are expected to cook and clean and to have lots of babies”, “more than half need permission from their husbands to go shopping” and sometime the woman can be beaten up for some reasons. As feminist’s point of view, they have a thought like why would the husband treats his wife like that? That is just a question, but the main point is that those women who live in rural regions deserve their equal right, but still they do not get. Waldfogel wants to emphasizes that women live in those rural regions have some expectation and they are just a tool or machine that work only for their husband. Waldfogel’s statistic is that “Sixty-two percent of women believe that it is sometimes acceptable. Thirty-four percent of the women surveyed believed a husband could hit his wife if she neglected the children, while nearly a third believed that showing disrespect and going places without permission warranted a beating. One fifth of women believe husbands are entitled to hit them for cooking a lousy dinner.” Following this statistic, he is sure about women deserves their right, and TV is the element for the revolution to start. If the Indian woman were treated like the third class people in French revolution, then a revolution will start soon.

I agree with Waldfogel about woman right, but I do not think sitting down and watch television will help those woman in not getting beat up by their husband. From the past till now, many woman have stood up to get their right. I do not think by watching some television commercial will help them to gain their right. I do believe that by watching television will bring knowledge, but not freedom or even equal- right.
